Coding Agents

Coding agents can read the same graph you see in the platform: which services call a method, every call site, how a field flows, and what a change would break. The CLI serves it to them over the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

While the agent runs, the CLI scans the repository again whenever files are saved, so the agent sees your changes, including the ones it just made, laid over the shared graph. Those scans are private: only you see them.

Set Up

  1. Install the CLI and log in. The agent reads the graph as you.
  2. From the repository’s folder, add the CLI to your agent as an MCP server, with the command for your agent below.

Scan a Repository in the platform’s sidebar shows the same commands.

The agent runs protomap mcp serve in the folder it works in. To watch another folder of the repository, add --path <folder>.

What the Agent Can Do

The agent gets read-only tools to:

  • List repositories, services, and methods, and find items by name.
  • See what calls a service, and what it calls.
  • Find everything that depends on a service or method, directly or through other services: its blast radius.
  • List the flows of a field, and show one flow step by step, with the code at each step.
  • Describe any repository, service, method, message, or field, as the platform’s detail sheet does.

Try asking your agent:

  • Which services call CartService/GetCart, and where?
  • I’m renaming user_id in PlaceOrderRequest. What breaks?
  • Trace where Product.price_usd goes after GetProduct returns.

Remote Agents

Section titled “Remote Agents”

Agents that cannot run the CLI, such as ones hosted elsewhere, can connect to your server’s MCP endpoint directly, at <server>/mcp, over Streamable HTTP. Authenticate with a personal API key in the Authorization header:

They read the shared graph, with your latest private scans laid over it.
